Watched Phantom of the Opera last night. Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford sang the soundtrack to my college career, since the Broadway version didn’t leave my tape deck for weeks at a time. It’s ironic, but though I knew every word of libretto, every soaring aria, I knew only the barest nuances of whole plot, how the roles fit together, how it ended. My God, the tragedy. I never knew. I cried so hard I couldn’t speak.
My boy has music in his heart. It’s a long movie, maybe 2 1/2 hours, and it was way past his bedtime, but he watched every moment. Made me pause it when he went to the bathroom, wouldn’t go until I’d promised not to start it without him.
The Phantom touched his love of dark things. The music mesmerized him. He threw his arms wide and swayed with each swell. It was a wonderful thing, sharing that joy with his 6-year-old heart. He’ll be too old soon too enjoy a musical with abandon, once his machismo kicks in. Perhaps he’ll always be able to enjoy it with me, in secret. I won’t tell, Little Bubba.
(So Wyrdd, you see that it was ironic to visit your site this morning and see a Sarah Brightman plug.

How. Cool. I’ma rent it and let my kids watch it. They might like it, too. IF I can get them out of their “the scary music scares me” mode. UGH.
Your brothers never quit liking things like that, She…I think Little Bubba will be fine…although he may learn not to mention certain things to certain friends…lol
You know, I have yet to see Phantom of the Opera. I’ve wanted to for a long time.
Ah, how sweet to share something so special with your boy! I hope you never lose that.
My kids went through a phase of loving PotO a couple years back too.

For a long time my son’s favorite color has been pink, but recently he announced that pink was for girls. He paused and then said that he still liked pink–he just didn’t like it at school. Oh, what boys must keep secret!
Marta, your boy is…5, right? My son’s favorite color used to be pink, too, and suddenly wasn’t. Now he likes Hulk green.
Fal and Knyt, the movie is rated PG13, so you might want to watch it first. There is no sex at all, no nudity except for one guy mooning (I don’t count that as “nudity”, though, because it was funny.) but there was a couple of violent scenes where the Phantom strangles people, one gets hung by a noose, and once the Phantom as a boy is beaten. I’d say the violence isn’t as bad as Spiderman, though.
Mom, I hadn’t considered that my brothers still love that stuff. Guess I won’t worry too much.
Ya know, it sounds really cool. I’ve never seen ALW’s version; only the classic, old-time Saturday afternoon B-movie horror version. Which still wasn’t bad.
I’m going to check it out. If the violence isn’t as bad as SM, it’s probably okay. SM was pretty tame and the violence was for sissies.
But no sex? No nudity? I hope I can stay awake.
